National Day of Unplugging

National Day of Unplugging - sunset March 1 to sunset March 2

One of our Saged team was recently away for a weekend in the snow and found herself unable to be online for much of the weekend. Upon returning to the city and diving back into her uber connected life, she found how valuable and nourishing a mini digital detox can be.

While reflecting on this, and frankly just wanting an excuse to not be on our devices all day, every day, we came across a post on the internet about “National Day of Unplugging” from sunset March 1 to sunset March 2. When we looked a little deeper into it, this particular movement is based on the traditional Jewish Sabbath, Friday sundown to Saturday sundown.  We think adapting this practice of unplugging goes beyond any religion and can be helpful for all of us to reconnect with our families, friends, even pets and especially ourselves.

Though we are a digital media community, a huge part of our mission is sharing rituals and practices to reconnect with mother earth, the cycles of nature and ultimately, our higher selves. Unplugging feels like a vital part of self-care and grounding, so we are taking a day to unplug and hope you do too.

If you are super busy and fear falling behind, it might seem counterintuitive, but taking a break can actually make you more productive. And when you dive back in, it’ll be with a clearer mind.

You can make this practice all your own by choosing any day or timing that works for you. If you think you’ll have a hard time doing this alone, make a plan with friends and leave your phones at home. Pick a time and place to meet and go on an unplugged adventure together from there. It’s a wonderful opportunity to really connect with each other and to notice what’s around you.

If you need ideas on what to do during your unplugged time, browse Saged for baths, recipes, rituals and practices before you shut down.

Benefits to a digital detox:

  • Greater productivity

  • Increased ability to focus

  • More engaged conversations

  • Improved relationships

  • Reduced stress

  • Better sleep

  • Better mental and physical health

  • More peaceful

  • More time to do what you want

  • More creative

  • Refined problem solving skills

  • Create boundaries (if you’re not responding asap any time of day or night - this will have the added benefit of helping others to release themselves of the need to do that too.)

We love and need our technology as much as anyone, we also love and need some time away from it. Don’t worry, the internet will still be there when you’re done.

Happy digital detoxing! We’ll see you on the other side!
